Rotary Presents Freedom House President With Distinguished Service Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                 February 20, 2009

(Green Bay, WI) The Rotary Club of Green Bay is recognizing Gary LaFave, president of Freedom House Ministries and Freedom Life Skills, for his distinguished community service.

LaFave has been named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary club. He was presented with a pin, medallion and certificate in a special presentation at a recent Rotary meeting.

LaFave became president of Freedom House Ministries in 2003. As an ordained minister, LaFave guided Freedom House from a bankrupt organization in a rundown facility to a new $4.5 million property that serves an average of 12 homeless families at a time. The organization’s mission is to provide homeless families with children hope by providing a hand up and not a hand out.

He added duties as president of Freedom Life Skills in 2007 as a way through a 26-week course to help families stop the cycle of abuse, enrich relationships, and enjoy a healthy home.

An anonymous benefactor donated $1,000 to be used by the Rotary Foundation, in LaFave’s name, to help with its fight against poverty, hunger and disease around the world.

The Paul Harris Fellow, one of Rotary International’s highest honors, is named for Paul Harris who formed the world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, in 1905.  His intention was to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth and to provide a way for business leaders to provide community service.

In addition to the honor, Rotary International has proposed that clubs designate February 23rd as “Rotary Day” in their communities and use the opportunity to generate public relations for the work of Rotary. The Rotary Club of Green Bay will designate the day at the February 23 meeting held at the Hotel Sierra at noon, media is invited to attend.

The Rotary Club of Green Bay began in 1917 and is part of Rotary International.  It has recently provided community leadership for projects ranging from children’s dental health, to a men’s closet providing clothing to men in need, to helping supply local food pantries with basic food supplies for children and families, to helping provide resources for basic shelter and health needs in countries around the world.
