(Green Bay WI) What is it? They are working together to wipe out Polio worldwide. The disease was basically eliminated in this country in the 1950’s but it remains a major problem worldwide and because of its nature, polio could become an increasing problem unless steps are taken to eradicate it.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recently committed a $255 million grant to Rotary International (RI) to help with the eradication, with RI committed to raising $100 million matching contributions. This is in addition to a $100 million challenge grant previously provided by the Gates Foundation.
The Rotary Club of Green Bay plans to do its part by holding a “Fun”-raising raising event in conjunction with Let Me Be Frank Productions on Wednesday, March 4 at the Meyer Theater. Frank’s group will donate a portion of the process from the nights show to the polio effort. The show is “1963 Oh What a Night” The show provides plenty of music and comedy. Check out Franks web site at http://franksdinnertheatre.com/. Attendees will be treated to free Hors d’ Oeuvres, a Silent Auction and a Live Auction. A cash bar will also be available. Tickets for the evening are $35 per person.
In his recent annual letter about the Gates Foundation’s work, Bill Gates wrote, “Many people probably think polio has already been eradicated, because it gets so little press coverage … Eliminating it will require continued investment. Many people had hoped that it would be eradicated by now, but it has proven more difficult than expected … With a few more years of investment and hard work the world will have a success with polio, which will invigorate the whole field of global health.”
