Local Rotary Club Helps Reduce Poverty & Hunger

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                 February 3, 2009

(Green Bay, WI) Seeking to help with a major need in the greater Green Bay area, the Rotary Club of Green Bay has made decreasing poverty and hunger its main service project. The Club has partnered with Festival Foods, The Salvation Army, WFRV and Y100 to expand the “Food for Neighbors Project.”

“When asked what type of local service project was preferred by our members, they said they wanted to assist with poverty and hunger,” said David Yeghiaian, Rotary Club of Green Bay President. “Instead of creating something new, we wanted to collaborate with others that already had a good program and help expand it.”

The Rotary Club of Green Bay is helping grow the program by developing strategies to enhance contributions, along with involving club members in activities to increase awareness of the poverty issues in our community. “Food for Neighbors” is designed to help supply local food pantry’s with basic food supplies which are distributed to children and families in the community.

In November, more than 1,900 pounds of food were collected at two Green Bay Gamblers games. Future events include:

  • Having a food collection at the Hotel Sierra on Feb. 9 and 16. People can drop off bags of food from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm on both days at the Hotel Sierra, 333 Main Street, Green Bay. Food will be delivered to Paul’s Pantry and The Salvation Army.
  • Serving food at the NEW Community Shelter in March.
  • Selling pre-packaged food bags at Festival Foods in April. The bags will be donated to local shelters.
  • Participating in the United Way Personal Hygiene Campaign in May.
